National Pekapeka Hui 2026

The National Pekapeka Hui 2026 is the tri-annual gathering of people working to protect and restore pekapeka (native bats) across Aotearoa. In 2026, the hui will be hosted by Finding Franklin Bats in Waiuku, Franklin.

Since the last national hui in 2023, the bat-conservation space has grown significantly. There are more community groups actively monitoring bats, more private landowners engaging in protection and restoration work, and increasing momentum to bring together mātauranga Maaori, scientific research, and on-the-ground practice in meaningful ways.

This hui provides a dedicated space for scientists, iwi, community conservation groups, private landowners, practitioners, students, consultants, and government agencies to come together over three days. The focus is not only on sharing research and results, but on building relationships, exchanging practical tools and experiences, and strengthening partnerships that support long-term pekapeka conservation.

Across the hui, participants can expect a mix of presentations, workshops, case studies, and koorero that reflect the full spectrum of bat conservation in Aotearoa, from iwi-led and community-driven initiatives, to applied ecological practice and emerging research. The hui is designed to be practical, collaborative, and people-centred, supporting both those new to pekapeka mahi and those with long-standing experience in the field.
